Haldon Forest: 3,500 acres of woodland fun

Haldon Forest is a magical place about 20 minutes drive from Sandays, close to Exeter Racecourse. There are 4 well marked walking trails including the Discovery Trail, a multi-use, all-ability trail with traditional and natural play features, and the Sensory Trail at Mamhead has been specially designed to stimulate the senses of visitors of all abilities. We like the Raptor trail because it loops close to the wonderful Belvedere Tower and we take a detour to enjoy the views.

There are also cycling, orienteering, segway and riding trails, plus the opportunity to have a forest adventure in “Go Ape”. Although an extremely popular place, 3,500 acres means room for everyone! Some activities have to be booked in advance.

Belvedere Tower was built by Sir Robert Palk in 1788 in memory of General Stringer Lawrence. It has been restored by the Devon Historic Buildings Trust and is used as a wedding venue and an apartment. The 360 degree views are magnificent and it is a great place for a picnic.
