We were spoilt for choice over the bank holiday with special events happenning in both Starcross and Dawlish, ie one stop on the train in either direction! At Dawlish there was a street market, bands and fun on the lawns, whilst at Starcross St. Paul’s church organised a “Past & Present” weekend. The latter was hugely interesting and we had guests at Sandays who came specifically for that event because of a connection with the town going back to the second world war. There were contributions from many people on many aspects of the town, and a special focus on the Royal Western Counties hospital that was once such a significant presence in Starcross. Weeks of planning culminated in a memorial stone dedicated to those living and working at the hospital and especially those who were buried in the churchyard in previously unmarked graves.
